His immigration position marginalized him nationally. Kennedy’s lack of clout (and his Capitol Hill mystique) was exposed when he couldn’t come close to making a president out of his Massachusetts colleague John Kerry in 2004. And although Barack Obama politely thanked Teddy for his endorsement earlier this year, the nominee is keeping a safe distance from the Kennedy crowd and the Schwarzenkennedys in California.
