Dianne Feinstein’s Digs A California Reader Wonders When Major League Baseball Will Lobby Congress For More Non-Immigrant Visas For Foreign PlayersFrom: Tim Aaronson [e-mail him] Re: Joe Guzzardi’s Column: On Cinco de Mayo, Strike Three For American Baseball Players? When it comes to sports, I am one of those completely uninterested folks Guzzardi referred to. Is this baseball or football season? Nevertheless, his column hit a home run with me. I have never thought about sports and immigration. And Guzzardi’s outrage at MLB going overseas for players instead of looking toward our inner cities is well founded. I have a prediction, or perhaps a column idea,---the Bill Gates Effect. It won't be long before baseball’s commissioner, Bud Selig, appears before Congress complaining about the dearth of American players and demanding an increase in B visas so that teams can fill up their rosters with overseas players. Tim Aaronson is the author of “ On Teachable Moments (about billboards)”, an exchange with an Hispanic teacher about ProjectUSA’s brilliant billboard campaign, The Social Contract, Spring 2000.
