Guzzardi's Column:
On Good Friday: Looking Back At America's Past---And A
Prayer For America's Future
Roger Cardinal Mahony may have spent Easter with his
beloved illegal alien friends on Olvera Street blessing
the
animals. But in general, he's been subdued in his
advocacy of comprehensive immigration reform, at least
compared to past years.
Just a week before Easter,
Mahony was on trial in
Fresno where two brothers George and Howard
Santillan had brought a $20 million lawsuit claiming
that they were molested by Monsignor Anthony Herdegen
nearly thirty years ago.[Jury:
Fresno Diocese Not Liable for Molestation by Priest,
by Pablo Lopez, Fresno Bee, April 3, 2009]
Mahony was a high level
administrator in the Diocese of Fresno during the period
when the alleged molestations occurred.
While the court dismissed the charges,
the trial must have been a painful reminder to Mahony of
his complicity in multiple cases throughout the San
Joaquin Valley that involved priest pedophilia.
