Help VDARE.COM Defeat The Obamnesty—And Defend Free Speech!

Peter debating immigration with the Future of Freedom Foundation’s Jacob G. Hornberger at the Heartland Institute’s 24th Anniversary Dinner, Chicago, October 2,2008

By Peter Brimelow, Editor, VDARE.COM

You don’t give up hope in the Easter season. The contrast between the dark despair of Good Friday and the elemental ecstasy of Easter Sunday, so powerfully associated with the resurgence of spring throughout the Western World, is simply too resonant.

And, as I have repeatedly said on VDARE.COM, there are more mundane reasons why I believe immigration reform patriots should not lose heart.

For one thing (this is an advantage of age!) I remember how all-conquering the Soviet Union appeared to be some thirty years ago, after the American defeat in Vietnam. I remember a senior statesman at a conservative magazine telling me that he privately believed the Red flag would soon wave over the world—but that he fought on because a) you never know; and b) “there are theological injunctions against despair”!

Within four years, against all odds, this man’s long-time favored Presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan, had bounced back and won the White House.

Within fourteen years, wholly unexpectedly, the Soviet Union collapsed and vanished.

Today, when I tell my children that we Baby Boomers seriously feared that the Cold War would end in nuclear conflagration, they look at me puzzled—that is, even more puzzled than usual.

A similar dramatic reversal of political fortunes can happen again.

I believe that one day, my children’s own children will look at them with equal puzzlement when they are told that there was a time when the historic American nation came to the point of drowning itself with out-of-control mass immigration.

But only if we act now. Only if we have your help.

For, despite what I’ve just said, this in fact a really terrible time—for America, for the patriotic immigration reform movement, and alas, for VDARE.COM.

Two recent events sum it up for me:

  • Cecilia Munoz, whom we’ve been exposing for years, formerly of La Raza and now Obama’s director of intergovernmental affairs, one of many fanatical immigration enthusiasts infesting the Administration, was apparently the source of the New York Times’ April 8 front-page story Obama to Push Immigration Bill as One Priority.

Because the New York Times continues at the top of the Main Stream Media food chain, the story has been widely trumpeted as a sign that Obama’s long-predicted amnesty offensive—call it the “Obamnesty”—had begun.

  • Right about the same time, I got very bad news: one of the small, faithful group of major donors who have been critical to VDARE.COM existence was not renewing its grant.

This is a heavy blow to VDARE.COM. It has undone, at one stroke, two or three years of progress in diversifying our funding base. It threatens our ability to pay one of our key writers, for whom the grant was earmarked.

And the reason our donor friend sadly cited—the stock market crash—is particularly chilling. It confirms our fears and naturally makes us apprehensive that more bad news is on the way…right at the time VDARE.COM is most needed.

Do I think the Obamnesty can be stopped? Yes.

Do I think the Obamnesty will be stopped? Maybe…

The Obamnesty will be stopped only if ordinary Americans stage the kind of extraordinary grass-roots revolts that stopped amnesty, twice, during the Bush Administration.

A lot of factors went into those revolts. Talk radio deservedly gets a lot of the credit.

But another factor was that American citizens were armed with facts and analysis about America’s immigration disaster. At a more detailed level than is possible over the air, this can only be done via the internet.

Remember the pro-amnesty newspaper editor who wrote ruefully after amnesty was defeated

“The opponents of the bill prevailed and they did so in a grand manner that I had to respect. It was democracy at its best—and an instructive lesson for anyone interested in politics. Countless times a day, I received messages from a variety of groups that had Freedom or American or Liberty as part of their title.

“The discipline of these groups was a sight to behold. Someone created a set of talking points that declared opponents need only focus on one word—amnesty—to denounce the legislation. And every group that came out against it did precisely that.”

Note that this pro-amnesty editor was getting “messages” i.e. email—and that he had obviously never heard of the groups he was getting messages from, i.e., they were grass-roots organizations.

At VDARE.COM, our role is to create those “talking points”, and the sophisticated arguments behind them, and make them available to patriots. (Our archives are all online—and we don’t charge!) And I’m happy to say we ran an article discussing the critical importance of the word “amnesty” way back in 2004.

But this vital work, essential to stopping the Obamnesty, can only be done if we can pay our writers.

We post every day at VDARE.COM, an enormous amount of material. There are just so many targets!

And what we post is prepared to the highest professional standards—I’ve not been working in the Mainstream Media for 30 years for nothing. And we use hyperlinks, not the least of the advantages of this wonderful new medium, better than anyone else on the internet...at least, I think so. They help us document our case. Readers who are new to the cause of patriotic immigration reform find our hyperlinks particularly compelling. But the whole process is very labor-intensive.

Money is our secret weapon at VDARE.COM. Our fixed costs are very low, we operate entirely virtually. We don’t have to pay printing and postage (thank goodness!).

What this means: essentially everything you give goes to pay writers and editors.

Our writers and editors are not paid as much as I would like. But they do get something. This ability to pay our writers is what has distinguished VDARE.COM from a host of excellent but evanescent blogs which have come and gone.

Writers will often write for love—because they passionately believe in our cause. But in the long run, they need to be able to justify the time spent, to their families and to themselves.

At VDARE.COM, we are in this for the long haul. We are building an institution. We need money to do that. We can only do it with your help.

To me as a professional journalist, the quantity and quality of non-professional writing on the immigration issue that comes in over the e-transom has been a revelation. Many of these writers have full-time careers in other fields, some are students; I encourage these to write anonymously because of the very real reign of terror imposed by the curse of Political Correctness. Others are struggling, idealistic free-lancers; I shudder for them. All are patriots deprived of outlets because of the orthodoxy of the Mainstream Media.

And, as a professional journalist, I am constantly amazed at the huge immigration-driven stories that are just not covered in the Main Stream Media—liberal or “conservative”.

I mean, how can they resist? But they do.

I wrote in our Christmas fund-raising appeal about two such stories:

  • The Presidential Election

The extraordinary unreported fact that white Americans, i.e. the historic American nation that created the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution and won two World Wars, voted heavily against Obama—and that it lost largely because of demographic shift caused by the federal government’s post 1965 immigration policy. Unless that policy is changed, it will be increasingly difficult for the historic American to control the country it built.

  • The Financial Crisis

(We feel even more strongly about this now that our donor has backed out!) The Crash of 2008 was a “perfect storm”—it needed several elements to come together. But a key element was the loosening of mortgage lending standards, imposed on the industry by a bipartisan consensus of politicians, in order to subsidize/ bribe minorities and immigrants.

We’ve said it bluntly at VDARE.COM: the U.S. has been plunged into a “Diversity Recession”—driven by a “Minority Mortgage Meltdown”. Our Steve Sailer has documented this phenomenon in several full-length articles. (We hope to publish a book on this soon—more later!) But at VDARE.COM, we highlighted this problem way back in March 2004—in Thomas Allen’s eerily prescient article The Mortgage Monsters Meet The Immigration Invasion. They Like Each Other, about the Federal National Mortgage Association (“Fannie Mae”) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (“Freddie Mac”) and their irresponsible pursuit of immigrant, often illegal alien, clients.

Allen concluded: We’ve known for some time that current mass immigration is politically unstable. Now it turns out that it’s financially unstable as well.”

Remember, that was in 2004!

Let me give some more recent examples of immigrant-driven stories that the MSM “spikes”—suppresses—and VDARE.COM follows:

  • Unemployment

Right now, unemployment is at 7.2%, a fifteen-year high, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There are projections that unemployment will continue to rise for as much as another two years and reach double digits.

Yet nowhere in the MSM, liberal or “conservative”, is there any systematic monitoring of the impact of immigration on employment. And, needless to say, government statistics do not make it easy to follow.

Nevertheless, our Ed Rubenstein has developed a way of tracking immigration’s impact through our VDARE.COM American Worker Displacement Index (VDAWDI), which he updates as new data is released each month. Nest week, we publish a major summary article by Ed.

Bottom line: immigrants captured more than half of all the jobs created since the last recession. And they have retained them during this downturn—whereas employment of native-born Americans is now down to levels last seen in early 2001.

Ending immigration, and eliminating the 10-20 million illegal alien presence in the U.S., is the simplest and fastest way to alleviated American unemployment. Yet the Obama Administration is going in exactly the opposite direction.

And the MSM—liberal and “conservative” is saying nothing about it.

  • “Immigrant Mass Murder Syndrome”

At the time of the 2007 Virginia Tech murder of 21 American students by a Korean immigrant, we at VDARE.COM were stuck by how very few MSM stories mentioned the killer’s immigration status—and how many (as in 2000% more) mentioned the alleged need to impose gun control on Americans. Moreover, investigation by our Brenda Walker quickly found a pattern of mass murders by aliens, apparently breaking under the very real strain of being plunged into a foreign culture. At that time, Brenda found no less than 23 killers, some 288 dead, 111 wounded.

That number has gone up since then—a lot. To monitor it, we have established a standing category, “Immigrant Mass Murder Syndrome”, on our blog. Invariably, these stories are buried in the MSM. Just a few days ago, a Vietnamese immigrant killed thirteen people in a Binghamton, New York immigration center. Again, the story was quickly suppressed, except for a few calls for gun control and a couple of allegations that the killer was unhinged by American prejudice.

Of course, there are American mass murders. As VDARE.COM always scrupulously points out (not that we get any credit for it), mass murder is not a job that Americans won’t do. But the disproportionate involvement of immigrants is unmistakable—and unreported, except on VDARE.COM.

  • The Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC] and the coming attack on the First Amendment

As I wrote recently in when introducing Brenda Walker’s article on the Binghamton massacre: “If the killer in the Binghamton immigration center massacre had been a white American, I have no doubt that much of the VDARE.COM Editorial Collective would be in police custody right now.”

I’m not joking about this. Similar soft totalitarianism is now rampant in Canada and Europe—again, unreported by the MSM, documented on VDARE.COM.

It’s only stopped here by the First Amendment. But now, with the advent of Obama, even that is under attack.

Already, Rep. John Conyers (D.-MI) has introduced a federal “hate crimes” bill, apparently intending to sneak it through unnoticed. Recently, the state of Missouri’s Department of Public Safety issued a report saying that supporters of Republican congressman Ron Paul, Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr and Constitutional Party candidate Rev. Chuck Baldwin—an ordained Christian minister, whose regular columns VDARE.COM carries—should be considered linked to “potentially violent” militias.

That report was withdrawn after talk radio and internet protest.

But while writing this appeal, I just learned of a similar federal Department of Homeland Security report, Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment”, dated April 7 and leaked to KOGO-San Diego radio host Roger Hedgecock, on whose show I’ve had the honor of appearing.

One sign of “right wing extremism”, according to the report: concern about immigration. It conceded:

Debates over appropriate immigration levels and enforcement policy generally fall within the realm of protected political speech under the First Amendment…” (My emphasis).

Thanks a lot!

My question: what does DHS mean, “generally”?

Experienced observers have no doubt that this creeping totalitarianism reflects the influence of the Southern Poverty Law Center—as we call it, the $PLC. VDARE.COM had numerous clashes with the $PLC since it named us a “hate group” in 2004. (We named the $PLC a “Treason Group“a shakedown scam that preys on the elderly, Holocaust-haunted rich”.) We have no doubt that the $PLC operates a black list to which many MSM print and electronic media outlets kowtow. Recently, we published the most sophisticated analysis of its (vast) finances yet. This will certainly hurt it in the competitive left-wing fund-raising world, which is what it really cares about.

Threats of the $PLC terrify most conservative and libertarian groups. (Examples available on request). They do not terrify VDARE.COM.

All of which means:
