This is Virginia Dare and you’re listening to the first Radio VDARE of the new Current Year, 2017.

We’re hardly fans of Newt Gingrich here, but the former Speaker of the House made an important point recently when he said he was worried about the Trump Administration losing its nerve.

"Look, they're going to arrive in Washington, and for them to be successful they have to stake out positions that [Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile] will not like and the left will hate," he said. "I'm worried that when they realize how big the problem is, that they decide that they're just going to do the best they can and give in."

[Newt Gingrich is worried the Trump team will ‘lose their nerve,’ by Bonnie Kristian, The Week, January 1, 2017]

Of course, Gingrich rather absurdly brought up environmental policy and school choice as the things he’s worried Trump will surrender on. Actually, there’s every reason to believe Trump will go to the mat on repealing certain environmental regulations and pursuing school choice. Both are policies where he can count on more or less lockstep support from the Beltway Right.

The real question is how far Trump is willing to go on immigration. Already, the Left is promising street protests and massive acts of civil disobedience. Already, the mayors of certain sanctuary cities and even state officials in California are saying they will resist the federal government. And already, we have resistance from within the GOP, notably the Cuck Squad of Jeff Flake, John McCain and Lindsay Graham, to any patriotic policies which might to lead to America getting control of its borders.

Ultimately, everything depends on the will of Donald Trump himself when it comes to getting something done on immigration. No one else will help him. Paul Ryan has made it very clear the GOP Congress simply wants to govern like it is George W. Bush’s third term, passing tax cuts for billionaires, slashing entitlements, and trying to whip up tensions with Russia for some reason.

But Donald Trump didn’t run, or win, as a typical Republican. He won as a populist nationalist. And that’s why his following was so energetic and stuck by him, despite the media smear campaigns, despite the occasional gaffes and mistakes, despite the relentless denunciations by the members of his own party. As Ann Coulter accurately observed, if Trump loses his base by caving on immigration, he can be politically taken out with a paper cut.

There are some signs Trump understands what is at stake. According to Got News, it was John McCain and Lindsey Graham who blocked Kris Kobach from being appointed head of the Department of Homeland Security [Breaking: @senJohnMcCain & @LindseyGrahamSC BLOCKED @realDonaldTrump’s 1st DHS pick @KrisKobach1787 over Amnesty, GotNews, January 4, 2016]. Got News is also reporting Trump regrets having endorsed John McCain for re-election. These reports suggest Trump’s first instinct is to go to the mat on this critical issue and that he also understands who his true enemies are. There’s also the promising news that Trump is already asking the Department of Homeland Security for information relating to border wall and barrier construction.

Still, Trump has do more than just hold the line. The Republican Congress will be looking for any excuse to back down from meaningful action on patriotic immigration reform. Trump can also expect fierce resistance from within the bureaucracy. And finally, the Left has simply lost its mind since the election and is screaming frantically that this is the birth of fascism in America. Trump is going to get hammered no matter what he does; he might as well get hammered for keeping his campaign promises and enforcing existing immigration law.

What’s so terrifying about this moment is everything depends on Trump himself. He has a great deal of power, but only if he wants to use it. One of the most worrying things about Trump is he seems to genuinely care what people think about him, he wants to be taken seriously by the so-called elite. The worst thing Trump could do, both for himself and for the country, is cater to those who opposed him rather than dance with those who brought him. We’re counting on President Trump to keep his word. Build the wall, send them back, and put America First again. And while we love the God-Emperor memes, we have every intention of keeping the pressure on and making sure President Trump keeps his nerve in 2017.

I’m Virginia Dare and we’ll talk again soon.
