Modest Proposal For "Most Powerful Librarian" [James Fulford] - 04/09/05

The NYT has an editorial suggesting that First Lady Laura Bush, whom they refer to as "the most powerful librarian in the world " devote herself to pushing libraries, with a reference to the situation in Salinas, where , as Joe Guzzardi pointed out in this space, they almost had to close the public libraries because of (immigration driven) funding problems.

There`s no mention of the budget-busting immigration invasion in Salinas or anywhere else.

Then the NYT says this:

As globalization takes hold, American workers have more competition than ever before from well-educated, hard-working people in places like India and China. For the United States to maintain its standing and its standard of living, it needs to make a greater commitment to books, literacy training, materials on English as a second language, and all of the other services libraries provide. [An Issue for the First Lady, April 8, 2005]

Actually, American workers have competition from uneducated but hardworking immigrants, not in India or China, but in Salinas.

And if the "the most powerful librarian in the world" could convince her husband to do something about the unguarded border, the library in Salinas would have more money, and less demand for literacy and ESL services.

Minute Men…Why Not In Georgiafornia Too? [D. A. King] - 04/09/05

By any measurement, the Minute Man Project in Arizona is a success.

Simcox, Gilchrist and the brave Americans who have participated have drawn worldwide attention.  to the shameful fact that the borders of the United States are no more secure now than they were on September 10, 2001.

In fact, illegal immigration has increased since 9/11. But in Cochise County Arizona, it has decreased since the arrival of the MMP.

The President, while labeling these brave Americans "vigilantes", has nevertheless sent long overdue additional Border Patrol agents to Cochise County.

This happened as a direct result of the MMP and the media attention.

Similar efforts are being considered in other border areas.

How long before groups are organized to assist the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] by "spotting" and reporting known illegals and those who employ them?

How long before the media attention is directed to the 20 million or more illegal aliens and the profiteering employers who are now openly violating immigration and employment laws all over the interior of our republic?

Why not here in Georgiafornia?

Enforcement of Title 8 1324 is another job that the president will not do.

"Vigilantes" indeed.

Gun and Recipe Blogging [James Fulford] - 04/09/05

Instapundit has links to Gun And Recipe Blogging. I`ll see if I can combine the two.

For breakfast I sometimes have what are called "yellow jackets."  You take some bacon and fry cold boiled potatoes in it. When everything is fried to within an inch of its life, you crack eggs over the whole mess.

You can vary this basic recipe, of course. If you`re some kind of health nut, for example, you can add vegetables, namely frozen green peas. They can go straight in the pan from the freezer, the bacon grease will take care of them.

It helps a lot if you have seriously nonstick frying pan.

It would also help a lot if the same kind of coating could be applied to your arteries, but who cares?

The reason I mentioned gunblogging is because I got this recipe out of a Gun Digest, twenty-five years ago. It was in a reprint of one of Lucian Cary`s "J. M. Pyne, Gunsmith" stories from the Saturday Evening Post.

You can buy a collection of the stories here: here or here. You can read one of the stories, Secrets of the Old Master, online, and when you do, you`ll notice that the America it pictures is not there any longer.

I`ll just mention one point. Joe Hill walks through the streets of Jersey City with two rifle cases over his shoulder, and his only concern is their combined weight of thirty pounds.

Today Jersey City has the most restrictive gun laws in the United States. He wouldn`t get three blocks.

No Irish Need Apply, 2005 [James Fulford] - 04/09/05

Remember "No Irish Need Apply" and its recent debunking? John Rosenberg, of the Discriminations blog points out that similar signs are going up at job fairs, but now they say "Companies recruiting at the fair are strongly committed to seeking executive, managerial and professional minority candidates and women."

Of course, if you`re Irish, it means the same thing.
