Executive Amnesty

H/T One Old Vet

With the White House briefing its MSM friends today that President Obama intends to decree even more sweeping Amnesty at the end of the week, it is pleasant to turn from the ugly fact that the GOP Leadership has been paid off to take a dive on this act of tyranny to evidence that (some) Democrats are experiencing qualms. Exactly what type of Democrat is significant.

Breitbart noted on Monday NYT, Washington Post Question Obama on Immigration by William Bigelow 17 Nov 2014

…the two leading liberal newspapers in the nation are hedging their bets, noting that Obama has jumped from one side of the fence to the other in the immigration debate since he became president. The New York Times and The Washington Post both released articles Wednesday outlining Obama’s reversal of his former reluctance to act unilaterally.
The Washington Post to its credit has now directly editorialized against Obama: In Mr. Obama’s own words, acting alone is ‘not how our democracy functions’ Nov 17 2014 and yesterday has followed up with a devastation and valuable collection of video clips illustrating Obama’s royal flip-flop on using executive action on illegal immigration By Glenn Kessler Nov 18 2014.

A particularly elegant and forceful dissent was On immigration, Obama is flirting with tyranny By Damon Linker The Week November 18, 2014

A democracy dies by a thousand cuts. A particularly deep one may come later this week, administered by none other than Barack Obama….

Now let me be completely clear: I'm all in favor of immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for immigrants already living in the United States. I think the refusal of the House Republican majority to pass an immigration reform bill…is a disgrace.

But what Obama is proposing is worse. Much worse...

The nation obviously faces no immigration emergency that could possibly justify the kind of extralegal action that Obama is contemplating. Cultivating a new constituency for the Democratic Party certainly doesn't rise to that level, but neither does a big-hearted attempt to stop often cruel deportations of individuals and families residing in this country illegally.

Have we really gotten to the point where the executive can ignore and even violate, on the absurdly open-ended basis of "discretion," the express intent of a federal law he is constitutionally empowered to execute — not because of an emergency, not because of a national threat, but merely because he wants to be a nice guy?

However plenty of voices are being raised to cheer the President on – for instance Obama Has the Law—and Reagan—on His Side on Immigration By Erwin Chemerinsky and Samuel Kleiner The New Republic and Like it or not, Obama's immigration action stands on solid legal footing By Raul A. Reyes Fox News Latino November 19 2014.

Here is my prediction: the Democrats who have reservations over this usurpation will mostly have their cultural roots in North West Europe, like America itself. Those of those who cheer King Barack on will generally hail from the barrio, the kraal – and the shtetl. Mark my words!
