Mexico is currently in the midst of a presidential election, in fact, the voting is scheduled for July 1st so it's not far away. Here is my latest Mexidata column on the election.

In the Mexican media it was reported on May 31st that coordinated demonstrations were held in various U.S. cities, in support of candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, known also by his initials AMLO.

One such demonstration took place in front of the White House in Washington, D.C.:

Dozens of Mexicans resident in the U.S. demonstrated in front of the White House, in support of the candidate...Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Bearing signs....and a Mexican flag, fifty men and women stayed almost an hour in front of the American presidential residence... Ricardo Juarez, of the group Mexicanos sin Fronteras (Mexicans without Borders) said that their presence was to show their support for Lopez Obrador, "demand that the electoral process be clean and exhort millions of Mexicans more that live here [in the U.S] to vote for change."

Would that be "Hope and Change"?

But it wasn't just in Washington, D.C., there were pro-AMLO demonstrations "in 20 cities in the world and in the Mexican capital..."

In New York City, there was a demonstration with about 80 Mexicans involved. Lorena Patino, coordinator of the NYC demonstration, said that "The objective is to demonstrate that there are many people in New York who are with Andres Manuel. The challenge now is to generate noise in the social networks so that our message arrives to people in Mexico."

Other American cities with similar demonstrations were Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin, Milwaukee and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
