John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas,  a town so overwhelmed by  immigration that it was at one point forced to consider closing its public library. His most famous book, The Grapes Of Wrath, was about White Anglo Saxon Protestant migrant farmworkers during the depression.
