Several blog entries  about the gruesome decapitation on the Canadian bus have already been posted, more will likely follow.

I'd just like to point out that the murderer, Vince Weiguang Li, already bears Canada's most common surname.

That's right. The most common Canadian surname in Canada is no longer Smith, nor is it Johnson, nor Brown, nor even a French surname such as Gagnon or Tremblay.

As I pointed out in my recent surnames article the most common surname in Canada is now Li.

That was discovered in a 2006 survey of telephone directories. (See "Common Surnames", CBC News, July 26th, 2007)

As for Smith, it's now the second most common surname in Canada, while the third most common is Lam. In Vancouver, Smith has fallen to #8 and Wong is #1. In Calgary and Edmonton, however, Smith is still #1.
