Female scholars apparently have not yet been clued in to the fact that most American Ph.D.s are now doomed to a life of poverty.
I'm all-too-familiar with this problem as an unemployed 58 year old male science Ph.D. holder. Most current higher education openings are in lower-paid adjunct or short-term contract positions, instead of tenured positions. In my most recent adjunct professor positions at two different colleges, I earned approximately the minimum wage when my out-of-class preparation time was included.
As a 1993 Wall Street Journal article regarding the ongoing Ph.D. glut makes clear, the most important law is Supply And Demand. [Black Hole Opens in Scientist Job Rolls by G. Pascal Zachary, April 14 1993] Universities create graduate student openings primarily to meet institutional needs for highly skilled graduate assistants—not to insure that careers exist for their graduates.
Naturally, the wage depression effects of the large influx of imported scholars that was created by the 1976 Eilberg Amendment and the Immigration Act of 1990 are not mentioned in de Vise's article. Instead, non-representative salary statistics are cited.
I predict that eventually the U.S. taxpayer will reach the breaking point. Perhaps at that time, reforms will occur that will re-instill meritocracy to higher education.
Gene Nelson has testified twice before the U.S. House of Representatives and twice to the National Academy of Sciences about the adverse impact of non-immigrant visas on the U.S. job market. During 2010, he helped to lobby for the passage of a state law, H.B. 737, that mandates the use of E-Verify for Commonwealth of Virginia direct hires beginning in 2012.
