08/30/07 - A Florida Reader Says You Should Cancel Your Vacation To Her State

From: Kathleen Pacifico

The July 28 ProAmerica rally was an expression of support for Mayor Don Cresitello's efforts to enroll Morristown police in the 287(g) program, which would allow state and local enforcement to investigate, detain, and arrest aliens on civil and criminal grounds. See a video of the event here.

New Jersey's political establishment and the local media had criticized Cresitello prior to the rally. Post rally, the criticism increased.

One week after the rally, America reeled in shock at the execution-style murders of three young Newark students and the shooting of a fourth, who survived.

Jose Carranza, a twenty-eight-year-old Peruvian illegal alien, surrendered in response to an arrest warrant. Carranza had been indicted twice this year, once for raping a five-year-old girl and again on assault and weapons charges and had been released on bail.

On August 13, Morristown's newspaper, the Daily Record, headlined the arrest of a fifteen-year-old boy in connection with the murders. As this story unfolded, I couldn't help thinking that Mayor Cresitello's detractors owed him an apology and applause for his efforts to curtail crime with the 287(g) program.

Instead, defying all logic, the Record expressed doubt that the 287(g) program would have prevented the murders. [Cresitello Sounds Off, Daily Record, Editorial, August 13, 2007]

Newark's Mayor Cory Booker and New Jersey's Governor Jon Corzine and U. S. Senator Robert Menendez attended the funerals amid vowed to end Newark's rampant crime.

In the days following, leaders announced plans for stricter gun control laws and high surveillance cameras and gunshot detectors in Newark's high crime neighborhoods.

However, no one announced plans to end Newark's sanctuary status—a crime in itself—or to enroll officers state-wide in the 287(g) program.

In spite of gun control laws, cameras, and gunshot detectors, Newark, as a sanctuary city, will continue to ignore federal law by nurturing the illegal alien lifestyle: illegal employment, tax evasion, identity theft, and document fraud, as well as to offer a hiding place for violent illegal alien criminals.

Governor Corzine has recently announced the creation of a Blue Ribbon Panel on Immigration—which will…discuss ways to provide education and training for illegal aliens so they will be ready should they be granted amnesty.

Amid this disconnect with reality, I have little hope that Mayor Cresitello will receive his well-deserved apology or recognition of his courage in striving to end illegal alien crime.
