The wonderful US Chamber of Commerce is at it again with a threat to the Stupid Party, "Pass Immigration Reform Or Sit Out 2016."

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue [Email him] promised Monday to keep pushing for immigration reform, quipping that the GOP should just stay home in the next presidential election if it doesn't address the issue.

"If the Republicans don't do it, they shouldn't bother to run a candidate in 2016," Donohue said at an event to discuss the nation's infrastructure. "I mean, think about that. Think about who the voters are."[VDARE.com: Donohue thinks—or claims to think—that there’s a big Hispanic vote which will be grateful for a GOP surrender.]

Chamber Of Commerce President To GOP: Pass Immigration Reform Or Sit Out 2016, Huffington Post, May 12, 2014

An announcement such as this is not a surprise coming from the US Chamber of Commerce but it does present a teachable moment about the organization.

The US Chamber of Commerce is not an official government body despite its name. It is a pressure group upon lawmakers whose membership is made of big-business/globo-corporations.

In other words, the US Chamber of Commerce is a bunch of crony capitalists who are not working in the interests of the commonweal.

And all citizens should worry about allowing large businesses to set major policy. Today's large businesses are tomorrow's bankruptcy cases.

In his excellent book, The Future of Capitalism, Lester Thurow shows how the biggest corporations from more than a century ago are now mostly extinct. All businesses, no matter how large, are basically ephemeral, but the damages they can do when lobbying policy in their heyday can be permanent. It is up to an informed citizenry to keep them in check.
