02/16/09 - A North Carolina Reader Discovers Who Works and Who Doesn't

Regarding your starting a "Second Generation Failure to Assimilate" file to match that on Immigrant Mass Murder Syndrome, this occurred to me a few years back as well, and I have two more candidates for you.

First, Andrew Kehoe murdered 38 schoolchildren and 7 adults (also injuring 58 others) one morning in 1927 in Bath, Michigan.  Most died from the explosives he planted under the school over the course of several months only half of which went off.  Six families lost more than one child.  This was the worst school killing in US history and, I believe, the worst mass murder until Timothy McVeigh in 1995.

I found Kehoe on the census, and, yep, his father came from Ireland.

Second, Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. was convicted of murdering 22-year-old student Dru Katharina Sjodin on the 40th anniversary of JFK's death.

Stories at the time said Rodriguez was born in Texas to a Mexican bracero, came to Minnesota at 13, and never mastered the English language even though his mother was also born in Texas.

Miss Sjodin was as Nordic as her name suggests. But of course no one dared attribute racial motives to Señor Rodriguez.
