 There is another way to consider this. The Pilgrims were invading the territory of the Americans, just as today's immigrants are invading America.  Unfortunately, for the Americans, they were divided into groups (i.e. tribes) that had a history of acrimony and contention. So that one American group did nothing to help  when the alien invaders destroyed a neighboring group. Sometimes, they even aided the invaders. When the the Americans (now called Indians) finally realized their need to unite and become allies against the invaders, it was too late.  

Perhaps history is not repeating itself.
