It may come as a surprise to the Admissions Office at the University of California that its greatly expanded 23 categories of Asians used to clarify ethnicities when applying to University of California are based upon nation, not race.

Candice Shikai, a UCLA student and director of the Asian Pacific Coalition (e-mail her) initiated the "Count Me In" campaign and was encouraged by UC's data collection department.

But whither go the British-American, Irish-American, German-American, Russian-American and Italian-American?

For white students, UC's motto is "Count You Out.
