Peter Brimelow writes: Our Christmas fundraising drive got off to a good start (many thanks to some old friends) but is now slowing alarmingly. I was hoping to open the site Sunday night, when Steve Sailer is scheduled to write—but I won't be able to do this unless donations pick up.

It's agonizing—because these vital stories cry out for coverage:

Unemployment unexpectedly rose today to 9.8%—alarming evidence that Obama's stimulus isn't working.

But nobody except VDARE.COM's Ed Rubenstein will calculate whether Americans suffered more than immigrants. We've been doing it for several years, but the Main Stream Media won't touch it…because it's too explosive. I hope to post Ed's analysis on shortly—but how can I pay him?

(For that matter, no-one except VDARE.COM seems willing to make the case for an immigration moratorium—which Ed has conservatively calculated would reduce unemployment by half of one percent each year.)

The DREAM Act amnesty has been staved off till next week. This Congress has 12 days left—but can the patriots hold out?

Brenda Walker has been writing about this issue and her contributions could really influence the debate— but how can I pay her?

(My personal favorite) There's been another War On Christmas atrocity, this time involving a major New York bank. Publicity could force it to back down—but who is going to cover it?

War On Christmas atrocities seem to be more blatant this year, maybe because of constant MSM propaganda that there's No Such Thing etc. We can counter the propaganda—but how do I pay the writers?

I had just started writing this Christmas Appeal—the most important of the year, when VDARE.COM raises most of its funds through the generosity of you, our loyal readers—when I was stopped by this impossible-to-parody headline (November 27) in the New York Times:

OREGON TEEN ARRESTED IN PLOT TO BOMB HOLIDAY EVENT

The New York Times still sets the agenda for much of the Main Stream Media, tree- and electron-based. Many local newspapers carry its stories unedited. So this headline was propagated across the country.

And the headline really says it all.

It wasn't an "Oregon teen". It was a Somali Muslim immigrant.

It wasn't a "Holiday" event. It was a Christmas Tree lighting.

Of course, the "teen", Mohamed Osman Mohamud, is innocent until proved guilty. And maybe federal investigators shouldn't be involved in such extraordinarily elaborate sting operations. (How come they never seem to sting the employers of illegal immigrants?)

But none of that excuses the reflexive reaction to the story by the editors at the key MSM gateway: Politically Correct censorship.

Instinctively, our political class just doesn't want Americans to know when immigrants (let alone Muslim immigrants) commit crimes.

That's why VDARE.COM has a running series of stories correcting this censorship (of criminals' race too, for that matter).  We even have a sub-category we call "Immigrant Mass Murder Syndrome"—into which the Portland Christmas Tree bombing would fitted very nicely. Did you know there have been at least twenty cases of immigrant mass killings in the last few years, with dozens of dead?

No, of course you didn't—unless you've been reading VDARE.COM.

But we can only correct this MSM censorship with your help.

And it matters. Because this sort of censorship looks silly, but it does have an insidious effect. A couple of years ago, we reported a particularly tragic Immigrant Mass Murder: an "Alabama father" threw his four children from a bridge. The MSM comment threads were choked with denunciations of brutal white trash—but we established that this anti-Southern bigotry was misplaced: the murderer was actually a Vietnamese immigrant.

On a grander scale: the MSM has suddenly reported that a majority of California public school students are now Hispanic. It's basically because California is Ground Zero for the "Mexodus"—the extraordinary process whereby successive Mexican governments have dumped their poor on the U.S. welfare system with no protest from Washington. VDARE.COM has been chronicling it for years.

But Californians who have depended on the MSM are like the proverbial frog in a pan of warming water, lulled into complacency about what is happening to their state and what it will inevitably mean—until it's too late.

Needless to say, as the NYT headline also showed, our political class doesn't like "Christmas" either.

At VDARE.com, we've been chronicling the War Against Christmas since we went first live, on Christmas Eve 1999. In 2008, Max Blumenthal of the fashionable Daily Beast even credited (= blamed) us for being first to invent the whole thing. We'll be announcing our annual competition to find the most egregious attack on Christmas shortly.

It's fun. But it's serious. The War On Christmas is a War against the West.

It's also been fun to see how rattled the ruling class has gotten about this pro-Christmas grassroots backlash. And they should be: in retrospect, it was plainly a harbinger of the grassroots patriotic backlash that stopped President Bush's amnesty efforts in 2006 and 2007 and, more recently, the great Tea Party uprising—the most important development in U.S. politics for many years.

The political class is losing control—which means the chances for patriotic immigration reform are improving dramatically. Help VDARE.COM make it happen faster!

When something like the Portland Christmas Tree plot happens, the MSM is critical in directing public reaction.

You all know what they currently want you to be thinking about:

Did the federal sting operation amount to "entrapment"?

Is there a backlash against Muslims?

Whereas, if VDARE.com had the resources, we would be asking quite different questions:

How did Mohamed Osman Mohamud get into the U.S. anyway? Was it under the notoriously dysfunctional "refugee" program? DOESN'T THAT SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE "REFUGEE" PROGRAM?

(In fact, VDARE.com's Brenda Walker and Thomas Allen, our refugee expert, have established that Mohamud was indeed a "refugee").

How did Mohamud get to be a U.S. citizen? It couldn't have been that long ago—he's only 19 now. DOESN'T THAT SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE SCREENING OF CITIZENSHIP APPLICANTS?

(It's not like it's the first time. Faisal Shahzad, the would-be Times Square bomber, and Farooque Ahmed, the alleged DC Metro bomber, had also both recently become U.S. citizens).

While we're on the subject, I'd also like to know: how did Mohamud get into Oregon State University? Was he a beneficiary of Affirmative Action quotas?

(Of course, I'd like to know the same thing about President Obama's career in academe!)

But the plain fact is that we don't have the resources to ask these questions. We can only ask them if we can pay writers.

That is why I must ask you to help us now.

There's never a good time for VDARE.COM to break away from immigration news. Sometime today (I'm writing in the small hours of December 1), there will be a cloture vote on the DREAM Act amnesty in the Senate.

The DREAM Act amnesty is an unusual immigration enthusiast measure in that the immediate victims, beside taxpayers, will be educated Americans. Since the influx unleashed by 1965 Immigration Act, and the simultaneous collapse of enforcement against illegal aliens, the main victims have been voiceless unskilled Americans (and software professionals, devastated by temporary worker scams as ably chronicled by VDARE.COM's Rob Sanchez). But now it's American college graduates who will face increased workplace competition.

And high school students—whenever you read MSM propaganda about some illegal alien swanning about an Ivy League campus, remember there's also an American teenager sick with grief over being denied that place.

That won't be reported in the MSM. But we do report it on VDARE.com.

We've written a lot about the DREAM Act amnesty over the years. But we can't cover it any more without your help.

The last two years have seen a great, albeit defensive, victory for the cause of patriotic reform.

When I wrote to you this time two years ago, I began:

"'We come to it at last, the great battle of our time.' "

"Like everyone else in the patriotic immigration reform movement, I feel a little like Gandalf, the good White Wizard, who makes this comment while calmly watching the war clouds gathering over the evil land of Mordor at the climax of The Return Of The King, the last of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

"And it's not just because of my hair!

"The Orcs are really marshalling out there, after Barack Obama's defeat of John McCain in the presidential race (being ultra-pro-immigration didn't help him, as we repeatedly predicted) combined with the Democrats' near-veto-proof Congressional majorities

"… Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told the Detroit Free Press just before Thanksgiving that 'on immigration, there's been an agreement between [President-elect Barack] Obama and [Arizona Republican Senator John] McCain to move forward on that. ... We've got McCain and we've got a few others. I don't expect much of a fight at all.' "

I'm quoting myself at such length because it's easy to forget how grave the situation looked back in 2008. Reid didn't expect much of a fight at all—remember?  

But it never happened—because the political class knew after losing the Bush Amnesty battles of 2006 and 2007 that Americans were not merely educated on the immigration issue, but organized, through the new alliance between grass roots patriots, talk radio, and the internet.

One of my happiest moments this year was being on Chuck Wilder's Los Angeles-based TalkBack radio show and having a caller from Indianapolis spontaneously tell us that he was printing off VDARE.COM articles to distribute at meetings of his local Tea Party group. Since then, other Tea Partiers have told me the same thing. Even Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan noted the new potency of grass roots activists armed with internet print-outs—n.b. not MSM editorials—in the struggle against Obamacare.

At VDARE.COM, our role is truly educational: to create those talking points and make them available to patriots. Our archived articles are all online—and we don't charge!

But, also in the last two years, something even more heartening has happened: the cause of patriotic immigration reform has gone over to the offensive.

It was Arizona passing its illegal alien enforcement measure, SB 1070, that propelled immigration back into the headlines—and re-elected Governor Jan Brewer, the sort of victory that must eventually penetrate the remarkably thick skulls of campaign consultants.

In my opinion, the probable next flashpoint:

Rep. Steve King's reported determination to use his likely position as chairman of the House immigration citizenship to raise the issue of "birthright citizenship"—the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment whereby the any children of illegal aliens born in the U.S. are held to be American citizens.

VDARE.com's Edwin S. Rubenstein has calculated that reforming this interpretation would, all by itself, halve the pace of Reconquista. VDARE.com has published dozens of articles on the subject, dating back to Howard Sutherland's magisterial review "Weigh Anchor!" nearly ten years ago. Now, finally, it looks like our time has come. Patriots will find our talking points all ready.

We've only had one fund-raising drive this year. And that was back in April, precipitated by a long-time funder's unexpected capitulation to the forces of Political Correctness. (I will be writing more about this)

Your response was most gratifying. We were able to stabilize our position through the summer, albeit making some editorial cuts that have been very painful, and which I bitterly regret.

But now our advisers are mad at me, again. They think I should remind you every few weeks that it's only your generosity and patriotism that keeps VDARE.COM going.

I know our advisors are right. But asking for money gives me the creeps.

And, frankly, management (me) is stretched pretty thin at VDARE.COM. If I spend time organizing an appeal, I can't spend it editing.

And we post every day at VDARE.COM, an enormous amount of material. There are just so many targets!

And what we post is prepared to the highest professional standards—I've not been working in the Mainstream Media for nearly 40 years for nothing. And we use hyperlinks, not the least of the advantages of this wonderful new medium, better than anyone else on the internet...at least, I think so. They help us document our case. Readers who are new to the cause of patriotic immigration reform find our hyperlinks particularly compelling. But the whole process is very labor-intensive.

Money is our secret weapon at VDARE.COM. Our fixed costs are very low, we operate entirely virtually. We don't have to pay printing and postage (thank goodness!).

What this means: essentially everything you give goes to pay writers and editors.

Our writers and editors are not paid as much as I would like. But they do get something. This ability to pay our writers is what has distinguished VDARE.COM from a host of excellent but evanescent blogs which have come and gone.

Writers will often write for love—because they passionately believe in our cause. But in the long run, they need to be able to justify the time spent, to their families and to themselves.

At VDARE.COM, we are in this for the long haul. We are building an institution. We need money to do that. We can only do it with your help.

To me as a professional journalist, the quantity and quality of non-professional writing on the immigration issue that comes in over the e-transom has been a revelation. Many of these writers have full-time careers in other fields, some are students; I encourage these to write anonymously because of the very real reign of terror imposed by the curse of Political Correctness. Others are struggling, idealistic free-lancers; I shudder for them. All are patriots deprived of outlets because of the orthodoxy of the Mainstream Media.

The last ten years have convinced me that an issue like patriotic immigration reform can only be addressed from completely outside the political establishment. I already knew that the Main Stream Media, liberal and "conservative", would not carry facts and analysis about America's immigration disaster. But I have been sorry to see that even fairly brave conventional funders can be intimidated by the terrible curse of Political Correctness.

Fortunately, the internet makes possible a wholly new type of journalism: one financed directly by its readers because they believe in the cause.

This strikes me as an entirely legitimate form of economic activity, like a church. And like a church, it's tax-deductible!

But in answer to capitalist purists among our readers: We do have two conventional sources of income—advertizing, through the mysterious automatic mechanism of Google Ads (yes, I know some of the ads are weird—but they are helping us keep going); and sales of books, and a surprising range of other items, through Amazon.com.

One final thought for tax week: Obamacare was not central to VDARE.COM's immigration focus (although we did point out that it represents a further subsidy from the American tax payer to immigrants).

But hidden in the vast Obamacare legislation was a significant increase in the marginal tax rate on "unearned income", i.e. income from savings, for "rich" taxpayers, i.e. those earning over $200,000 a year.

Also in the lame duck Congress, there must be a decision on whether to extend the Bush tax cuts. Again, it's not looking good for the "rich". And regardless, there are almost certainly still more tax increases coming.

It's one bright spot in a bad fiscal situation!
