A Golden Oldie: Derb vs. Wehner
Looking at the picture (above) that leads off James Kirkpatrick’s piece on “reform conservatism,” I was amused to see Peter Wehner there (standing, far right [sic]).
Wehner was, and for all I know still is, a champion of George W. Bush’s “compassionate conservatism,” a typically gormless Bush scheme to improve the GOP vote among women (“Look—we’re compassionate!”) and minorities (“We like you! We really do! Here’s a billion dollars!”)
Back in 2010 I fought a couple of rounds with Wehner over his support for Bush’s PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) initiative. The whole bout is logged here, though some of the links may have decayed.
