Re: Today’s Letter:
An Alabama Teacher Says His Illegal Alien
Students Are Better Off Financially Than He Is
If letter writer Carl Carlton can’t compete with
economically with illegal alien
Mexicans and Guatemalans, he’s a sorry piece of
work.
Carlton has a
social security card, the legal right to work and a
driver’s license. The aliens have none of those—or at
least they shouldn’t.
And this sorry,
sad sack can’t compete? God forbid Carlton ever
teaches my kids.
Joe Guzzardi comments:
I understand D’aquisto’s point. But having worked for
two decades in the California public school system, I
also understand Carlton’s frustration.
Most of the immigrant families I
dealt with, both legal and illegal, were on
some type of subsidy: food
stamps, Supplement Security Income and housing
allowances. Many of them also worked off the books,
freeing up cash to buy late model cars.
On the other
hand, the state and federal income tax Carlton pays on
his earnings means he has to get by on his net salary.
Depending on Carlton’s seniority,
he may gross
as little as $31,000. Alabama
ranks 43rd nationwide in teacher wages.
The immigrants
live off taxpayer funds. |
