A Skeptical Reader Says Athena Is Wrong About American Culture; She Replies

From: [Name Withheld]

Re: Athena Kerry’s Column: Multicultural Education—No “Americans” Need Apply

Yes multiculturalism is bad. It leads to Balkanization. But consider that there is no culture in America to speak of. What should immigrants assimilate into, MTV, unfettered consumerism, crass commercialism?

For the majority, that’s today’s America.

Scott Fitzgerald wrote that in the aftermath of World War I Americans had given themselves over to pleasure. Fitzgerald may have been premature but he would certainly be correct today.

The best we can do now is hope for the best.

Athena Kerry replies: Even in my youthful naiveté, I can't help but disagree. American culture is alive and well—even if it is hidden. Just because academics and moviemakers have lost touch with Americans does not mean that the culture doesn't exist.
