A CA Reader Isn’t Buying the Yakima Herald’s Story About Elvira and Saul

Immigrants bring in immigrants. And the immigrants, immigrants bring in, bring in more immigrants.

I propose the following scenario of Elvira Arellano's early history in the U.S. that is consistent with the facts and the calculus of self-interest that overwhelmingly drives all types of immigration into our country.

As I reconstruct it, back in 1997 Elvira's cousin “Maria,” named in the Yakima Herald story, needed a cheap nanny. So she paid the cash to get Elvira over the border and up to the Pacific Northwest.

This type of domestic servitude is popular among many immigrant groups, especially among the Chinese in the Bay Area where I live.

After all, where does a 22-year-old poor Mexican female get the money to pay a coyote? Almost invariably, the fee is put up by someone stateside who wants her to be a:

               (a) Maid in an immigrant-owned motel

               (b) Dishwasher in an immigrant-owned restaurant

               (c) Nanny in an immigrant (or liberal Democratic) household.

               (d) Prostitute in an immigrant-run brothel

After Elvira crossed the border, she went directly to the person who paid for her passage. But her nanny job got old after three years. The cruelest taskmasters are relatives to whom money is owed.

Elvira remained trapped by her obligations until relief came in the form of her pregnancy. She mistakenly believed that, with her citizen son, she could travel freely across the country---onward to Chicago.

“Maria's” unwillingness to talk to reporters suggests shame to me. Out of spite, she may have ratted Elvira out to ICE.

Moreover, the claim of some field worker named “Benjamin” fathering Elvira's son is too slick. Wouldn't he want to get in on the virtual immunity from deportation by recognizing Saul’s birth?

It seems more likely that Elvira watched kids by day, hooked by night and got impregnated by one of her Johns.

Saul then is the result of a careless union between two peons—one who paid the other for her services.

Engargiola is a research scientist with degrees in physics from Harvard and the University of Chicago. He writes that he lives and works in the East Bay and is happily married to a green card holder from the PRC.
