Enough Already About the Mexican-American War and
Anthony Lowry’s Letter in Response to Guzzardi,
A Mexican-American Reader Predicts the Reconquista Is
Just A Matter of Time---And He Can’t Wait
Dear VDARE.COM:
I thought you would like to see a copy of
the letter I sent to Anthony Lowry in defense of
Guzzardi’s column. My original letter, which follows
below, was written in Spanish. I provided a translation
for the benefit of your readers.
Dear Anthony:
I assume that, if you are a good
Hispanic, you know how to read
Spanish.
Otherwise, I don't know how you will
navigate the Macondo-like culture (Macondo is the
village in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's
"One Hundred Years Of
Solitude" where almost anything could and
would happen) that would reign in a
California managed like many of our own Hispanic
countries.
I was born and raised in the
Caribbean and I've been fortunate to travel
throughout almost all of Latin America and to live in
Mexico during the 1990s.
Nonetheless as I approach my fifth
decade, I consider myself an American by citizenship and
loyalty. My Hispania does not infringe on my
loyalty, fidelity or duty to America.
When
Abraham Lincoln opposed the American conflict with
Mexico, he was a neophyte politician. As he acquired
experience, his perspective changed. Thus, Lincoln’s
opinions at the beginning of his political career cannot
be taken as definitive expression of what he eventually
believed.
I see that you are pleased by the
dissolution of our
national identity by the infusion of Hispanics who
refuse to assimilate into our culture or ethics. It
seems impossible that you have served in the U.S. Army,
as you claim, since your words contrast with any sense
of duty or honor.
As a man who stood at the service of his
nation, you more than anyone must understand that the
American southwest was not stolen. It was sold as
part of the reparations conceded by the losing party in
the conflict. (Note - It is also of interest that
the Mexican side grossly underestimated the American's
capabilities and tactic. That miscalculation, and not
any of Santa Anna's many defects, was the cause of the
American Army's march and occupation of Mexico City).
The
skin color of the southwestern population may be
brown, white, purple or chartreuse, as long as the
people considers itself
American and act with that allegiance as its
compass.
It is that aspect of your note to
Guzzardi that disappoints this Hispanic who also served
our nation.
That is what is wonderful about
our country. It is inclusive of those who arrive to
obey the laws and legitimately contribute to our
society.
Ethnicity is a tool used by the enemy to divide,
corrupt and weaken. I'm surprised and disappointed that
you, who should be familiar with this type of
divisiveness, would so easily fall for such a ruse.
I hope that one day soon you’ll realize
that not only are you a "gringo", but that no
matter your leanings, Mexico will never consider you
more than a "poncho." (VDARE.COM:
poncho: something or someone of Mexican origin
that has been Americanized.)
It is up to you to accept your ethnicity
and understand that it is but one facet of a complex
being. Give yourself the peace of mind of being an
American offspring of two persons of different origins
who besides being half Mexican is also half American.
Being a
nationalist is not a defect.
I wish you good luck in your journey
toward the realization of who you are. When you
find your new self, I hope you won’t be too hard on the
former you.
