06/23/11 - A Wisconsin Reader Skeptical Of Lamar Smith's E-Verify Bill

Re Patrick Cleburne's blog post If Lou Barletta Opposes Lamar Smith's E-Verify Bill - Then So Do I

From: Vincent Chiarello (e-mail him)

Patrick Cleburne is not alone in questioning the trustworthiness of Chairman Lamar Smith's E-Verify bill; indeed, Rep. Barletta's comments are not fanciful at all, and that judgment has nothing to do with the fact that both our surnames end in a vowel.

After the Arizona case was argued last year, but before it was recently decided by the Supremes, I sensed a softening of Smith's approach in dealing not only with E-Verify, but the broader issue of border control as well. Something was missing.

In early Spring, a staff member of House Judiciary Committee spoke to our immigration group, the American Council for Immigration Reform, on the condition of anonymity. The comments made were very distressing to many of our board members.

What Barletta is saying is what we intuited after the meeting, viz., that Smith, whether or not because of Boehner et al., will take a "relaxed" view of the situation so not to disturb those within the Republican leadership who still believe that the Hispanic vote is the sine qua non of a GOP electoral victory. In short, Smith and the GOP leadership will relegate the Tea Party people to playing second fiddle on the issue of illegal immigration.

For those of you who still think that the GOP learned its lesson last November, think again.
