Sometimes the best way to focus the public mind is a simple statement.

Regarding immigration: America is settled territory.  Immigration is unnecessary.

James Fulford writes: The late Ernest van den Haag said the same thing in an article published before the Immigration Act of 1965 was passed.

On the contrary, the time has come for the United States to consider itself settled territory—just like Germany, or Italy or Ireland [Which in 1965  were almost entirely populated by Germans, Italians, and Irishmen] and to stop encouraging immigration altogether.
