If you are not already familiar
with them, I recommend the studies of Dora L. Costa &
Matthew Kahn on the decline in social capital:
Understanding the Decline in Social Capital, 1952-1988 and
Civic Engagement and Community Heterogeneity: An
Economist`s Perspective. [PDF]
Both of them explicitly mention
racial diversity as a
cause of the
decline in social capital over the recent
generations. Though one can almost sense their
apprehension in bringing up the subject, they clearly
recognize multiculturalism`s corrosive effect on
cohesiveness within a nation.
