Re: Joe Guzzardi's Column: An Immigration Lawyer And Fiancée Visa Specialist Agrees With Joe That Changes Are Needed

Here's an interesting story that confirms what Guzzardi has been claiming all along in his columns regarding visa and marriage deceits. [Pair Arrested in Green Card Marriage That Resulted from Web Ads, By Scott Glover, Los Angeles Times, December 7, 2007]

Look at how 24-year-old Yuliya Kalinina described her proposition on Craig's List:

"Green Card Marriage—Will pay $300/month; total $15,000. This is strictly platonic business offer, sex not involved. Living together not required."

More amusing details from the Times describing Kalinina's eventual wedding:

"Performing the ceremony was Dmitri Chavkerov, an Internet-ordained minister who also happened to be Kalinina's live-in boyfriend."

Still more not so funny stuff… according to Kalinina's lawyer, Dale Rubin [Email him]:

"She also has a long-awaited hearing in her asylum case…at which she will argue that she was persecuted in her native Russia because of her Armenian heritage, he said. If convicted of the marriage fraud, she would face deportation after serving her sentence."

We could have guessed that Kalinina, who listened to the court proceedings through an interpreter, would have an asylum application pending.

But, oddly, Kalinina's name and physical appearance indicate that she is Russian. And, in any case, there's little if any persecution in modern Russia against Armenians.

In this crazy case, one thing is for sure. Everyone—Kalinina, her husband and the "minister" all knew the rules regarding fraudulent marriages.

They just chose to break them
