Incompetence May Save GOP In 2014—But Showdown With Its Base Lies Ahead

With Treachery is brewing amidst the Republican leadership, as Speaker John Boehner, House Judiciary Chair Bob Goodlatte, and Congressman Paul Ryan are trying to sneak through nation-breaking Amnesty/ Immigration Surge legislation. However, patriots can take some solace in this astounding effort of political tomfoolery—for once, the GOP’s characteristic incompetence and short-sightedness may work to our advantage.

Goodlatte is a typical example of the kind of the tactical blundering that epitomizes the tragicomic performance art that is now the Grand Old Party. A key figure in any attempt to change immigration laws, Goodlatte quietly took anti-Amnesty language off his official House website earlier this year. Unfortunately for him, the news was reported on National Review and linked to by the Drudge Report. [Website of Top House Republican Drops Opposition to Amnesty, by Fred Bauer, January 10, 2014]

While we can only hope NR Editor Rich Lowry and the rest of the Kiddie Cons read the thousands of irate comments that this provoked, Goodlatte apparently did. Within days, the Congressman restored anti-Amnesty language to his website, with the absurd excuse that “Congressman Goodlatte’s website is updated periodically and unfortunately during an update early last year, his position on amnesty was inadvertently deleted.” [Goodlatte reverses statement on amnesty, again, by Neil Munro, Daily Caller, January 13, 2014]

While this is a small victory, it also shows the utter contempt and relentless hostility which the Republican leadership views its own voters. Like enemy scouts, the Republican leadership is probing at the defenses of its own political base, hoping to find even the slightest crack to send its forces through.

We know this because they told us—or, at least, Goodlatte told the Hispanic network Telemundo‘s “Enfoque” show, in remarks that obviously were not supposed to be heard by conservative voters, that

If we can have a way to get [enforcement] up and operating, I see no reason why we can’t also have an agreement that shows how people who are not lawfully here can be able to be lawfully here – able to live here, work here, travel to and from their home country, be able to own a business, pay their taxes.

[Bob Goodlatte pushes immigration solution, by Seung Min Kim, Politico, January 9, 2014]

“No reason”? How about this: As Brenda Walker keeps saying, legalization IS amnesty.

At the same time, other meetings were taking place within the Republican Party Establishment. Congressman Jeff Denham of the formerly American state of California hosted

MAD MONEY Host Jim Cramer Blows Whistle On Immigration’s Effect On Jobs and Americans’ Welfare

It’s hardly surprising that the Main Stream Media refused to mention the immigration invasion as a key reason for the failure of Lyndon Johnson’s “War On Poverty.” But there’s a glimmer of hope: TV host and financial journalist Jim Cramer is making the case for putting American workers first:

The United States needs to focus on getting jobs for U.S. citizens instead of hiring immigrants and making deals with other nations for cheap labor, says Jim Cramer, host of CNBC's "Mad Money."

"Can we just help people get jobs who live here? We have so many problems in our country."

"To me, this is so basic. We obviously should be taking care of our own. We're Americans. Like, why can't we take care of Americans? And how did that get to be bad?

"Like, I'm trying to figure it out. How did it get to be bad that we should be thinking about the people who were here first before we start worrying about the people coming in?

"Tell me how the people coming in create jobs?""[Links added]

[Jim Cramer on Immigration: Take Care of U.S. Citizens First, by Bill Hoffman,, January 13, 2014]

After years of denial because of the incestuous relationship between the MSM and our power elite, it’s about time someone with a top-ranked show tells it like it is. Cramer cut through the gatekeepers of the cheap labor importers, job exporters, ethnic tribalists, and religious hypocrites to speak out for Americans first!

Furthermore, Cramer pointed out how our so called leaders are putting America Last when it comes to our trade policies with China. He also notes how even saying this opens him up to retribution.

Cramer challenged current U.S. policy on two hot-button issues.

"These ideas of unlimited free trade with the Chinese and unlimited immigration have somehow become good, and I question that.

"By questioning that, there's a lot of people

Why Congress Is Held in Contempt

"I've got a pen," said President Obama early this week. image

"I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions ... that move the ball forward."

"When I can act on my own without Congress, I'm going to do so," the president added Wednesday at North Carolina State.

Thus did Obama signal that he will bypass Congress and use his executive powers to advance his agenda of national transformation.

This dismissal of Congress has gone almost unprotested. In an earlier age it might have evoked talk of impeachment. But not now.

For though Congress may be the first branch of government in the Constitution, with the longest list of enumerated powers in Article 1, its eclipse has been extraordinary.

Congressional powers have eroded or been surrendered. The esteem in which Congress is now held calls to mind Emily Dickinson: "It dropped so low in my regard/I heard it hit the ground."

Congress boasts a 13 percent approval, a surge from its all-time low of 9 percent last fall before the budget deal.

While ex-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates expressed disappointment in Obama and Hillary Clinton in his book "Duty," and was dismissive of Joe Biden, his view of Congress dripped with venom:

"Uncivil, incompetent in fulfilling basic constitutional responsibilities (such as timely appropriations), micromanagerial, parochial, hypocritical, egotistical, thin-skinned, often putting self (and reelection) before country—this was my view of the majority of the United States Congress."

At Congressional hearings, Gates says he was "exceptionally offended by the constant, adversarial, inquisition-like treatment," and lines of inquiry that were "rude, insulting, belittling, bullying, and all too often personal."

Admirers of Obama, Hillary and Biden have all come forward to defend them. Where are the defenders of Congress from this searing indictment by Gates? Almost nowhere.

What happened to Congress? Not so long ago, school children were taught more about Sens. Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun and Daniel Webster than many of the presidents of that pre-Civil War era.

High among the causes of Congress' decline has surely been the loss or surrender of its constitutional powers -- to presidents, the Supreme Court and a federal bureaucracy Congress itself created.

Consider this. Under Article 1, Congress is entrusted with the power to "regulate commerce with foreign nations."

With the exception of slavery, there was not a more divisive issue before the Civil War than the tariff question. In the Jacksonian era, South Carolina almost seceded over the tariff, and Andrew Jackson threatened an invasion.

Today, Congress first surrendered to the executive the authority to negotiate trade deals,

John Derbyshire On The HANDLE’S HAUS List Of PC Purgees—And Dogma, Dissent, And Duty

Finding oneself among distinguished company is always balm to the ego, even when the “among” consists only of seeing your name with theirs in some list.

So there I was, blushing with pleasure at seeing my name on the list of “Bullied and Badgered, Pressured and Purged” at the Handle’s Haus blog.

Yes, there I am, along with E.O. Wilson, Sam Francis, Ann Coulter, James Watson, Pat Buchanan, Ron Unz, and other people I like and admire. Ah, fame!—or at least proximity to it.

The list, as its name tells you, is of persons who have suffered various levels of indignity at the hands of PC enforcers. It has been widely noticed, linked to from Reason, the Chateau, Vox Day, and our own Steve Sailer.

Ego satisfactions aside, it’s an interesting list. The first thing I wanted to know: did it confirm the belief, common on the Dissident Right, that there was an era of relative openness about human-science realities in the years 1995-2005? I attempted to quantify this belief in a 2009 column. I later aired it here on, whereupon Editor Peter Brimelow gave the era a name: the Interglacial.

Does HH’s list confirm the existence of the Interglacial?

The list is a moving target, as HH has declared his intention to add to it as suitable comments come in. At the time of setting finger to keyboard, there are 91 entries—I’ll call them “incidents”—on the list, identifying 92 persons (plus the entire Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints).

Tallying the incidents by date, I get this, which I’ve compared

Ann Coulter: Is Chris Christie Less Believable Than Tawana Brawley?

Ann CoulterI agree with MSNBC! I find it hard to believe that Gov. Chris Christie knew nothing about his staff's plotting a massive traffic jam on the ramp to the George Washington Bridge for political retribution.

On the other hand, I also find it hard to believe that Obama didn't know his own IRS was auditing his political enemies.

And I find it hard to believe that Obama didn't know you wouldn't be able to keep your doctor under Obamacare.

But most of all, I find it hard to believe that MSNBC host Al Sharpton didn't know Tawana Brawley was lying when she claimed to have been gang-raped by rogue cops on the Wappingers Falls, N.Y., police force.

Back in November 1987, 15-year-old Tawana Brawley was found curled up inside a plastic bag in an apartment building parking lot. She had feces and racist graffiti all over her body, her clothing was torn and burned, and she was apparently unconscious.

When she emerged from her (fake) unconsciousness, she claimed she had been held captive in the woods for several days, while being raped and beaten by six white men, including policemen and the local prosecutor.

The story being utterly preposterous, every law enforcement agency in the universe was called in to investigate—the FBI, local, county and state police. Gov. Mario Cuomo directed the state attorney general, Robert Abrams, to investigate Brawley's claims.

MSNBC's Al Sharpton was one of Brawley's "advisers" throughout this massively expensive investigation, along with lawyers Alton Maddox and C. Vernon Mason—both later disbarred

Eight months and 1.3 million taxpayer dollars later (in today's dollars), the purported attack was exposed as a complete fraud. It turned out that Brawley made up the gang-rape story to avoid explaining to her volatile stepfather why she hadn't come home for four nights straight.

Among other findings, the grand jury's 170-page report [PDF] noted these facts:

  • Witnesses saw Brawley getting into the plastic bag by herself, and then hopping around in it before curling up into a ball on the ground.
  • The hospital rape tests were negative and no semen was found anyplace on her body.
  • She had no recent bruises or other marks on her body consistent with rape.
  • Hospital technicians who evaluated Brawley concluded that she was faking unconsciousness.
  • Brawley was well-nourished, had clean breath, no bruises or injuries to her body and was not suffering from exposure, despite temperatures having dropped to freezing several times when she was allegedly being gang-raped in the woods.
  • Witnesses had seen Brawley in a vacant apartment where she had once lived during the period of the alleged attack.
  • In that apartment, investigators found charred fibers matching the burnt clothes Brawley had been found in, the source of the material that had been stuffed in her nose and ears, and the feces that had been smeared on her. Investigators even identified the dog whose feces it was. Her dirty clothes were still in a washing machine in the building.

At no point did Sharpton question Brawley's story or urge her to recant. To the contrary, as the case fell apart, Sharpton's demagoguery rose to Olympian heights.

He branded Abrams "Hitler," called Gov. Mario Cuomo a racist, and demanded

The Fulford File | Rape, Farmworkers, And The $PLC—Who Are The Real Criminals?

This is part of a Center for Immigration Studies article Immigration and the Press: Four Stories from the First Week of January, By Jerry Kammer, January 13, 2014. He's talking here about just one of the four stories, Female Farm Workers Speak Up About Sexual Harassment, from NPR's "Morning Edition", January 4, 2014:

Here is the intro of host Linda Wertheimer:

"Agriculture is one of America's most hazardous industries, but there's another danger for female farm workers — rape and sexual assault. It's difficult for any victim of sexual assault to press charges, and female farm workers have to overcome additional hurdles. Yet some are starting to speak up about the hidden price they may have to pay to keep a job in the fields."

And here is how reporter Sasha Khoka introduced the specific case of alleged rape that is the story's focal point:

"It started with a missing paycheck. In 2006, Guadalupe Chavez, a farm worker in California's Central Valley, was supposed to earn $245 for a week of picking pomegranates, money the widowed mother of two needed urgently to pay her bills. When she went to track down the check, a supervisor she never met before told her someone had it out in the fields. He said to follow him there in her car."

Like the ABC story [ note: A sob story about "The Human Cost (to illegals) of Crossing the U.S. Border"], this is solid, important, admirable journalism. Like the ABC story, it is illustrative of the kind of story that reporters gravitate to. They are drawn to stories that show immigrants as innocent victims who need protection.

Having cozied up to the Main Stream Media, Kammer dares voice a caveat:

My criticism is that little reporting shows an interest in telling the human stories and showing the human faces of those who are eager to speak up about the negative effects of mass immigration.

Yes, some of those who complain are racist and nativist, deserving of the epithets heaped upon those who want to regulate immigration. But most are good people, three-dimensional human beings who are struggling with complex circumstance. Their stories also deserve to be told and understood.

Of course, Kammer didn’t need to throw in that business about “nativists” deserving epithets—it’s a silly triangulating habit of his, see CIS' Krikorian, Kammer Make Fatal Concessions To SPLC.

But MSM stories about female farm workers being victimized are indeed common. My complaint (it’s more than a caveat): they don't say who is victimizing them.

The answer seems to be: “other immigrants”—or to put it another way “Hispanic males.”

The NPR story is unusual for a rape story, in that it names Guadalupe Chavez, the alleged victim, but not the accused—apparently because he was acquitted. They don’t say, and I can’t find any record of a trial in news reports, since contemporary stories, if any, would have suppressed Chavez’s name, as is traditional.

But was he an immigrant? Chavez is interviewed by NPR—in Spanish:

SASHA KHOKHA: It started with a missing paycheck. In 2006, Guadalupe Chavez, a farm worker in California's Central Valley, was supposed to earn $245 for a week of picking pomegranates,

Hated For Marrying A White Man—Tamera Mowry Is Not Alone

Hated For Marrying A White Man—Tamera Mowry Is Not AloneThis made my heart ache and my blood pressure spike: Actress Tamera Mowry, who is black, wept in an interview with Oprah Winfrey over the vile bigotry she has encountered because of her marriage to Fox News reporter Adam Housley, who is white. Misogynist haters called Mowry a sellout and a "white man's whore." International news outlets labeled the Internet epithets she endured "horrific" and "shocking."

Horrific? Yes. Shocking? Not at all. What Mowry experienced is just a small taste of what the intolerance mob dishes out against people "of color" who love, think and live the "wrong" way. I've grown so used to it that I often forget how hurtful it can be. Mowry's candor was moving and admirable. It's also a valuable teachable moment about how dehumanizing it can be to work in the public eye. Have we really sunk to this?

Young actresses in the 21st century forced to defend their love lives because their marital choices are politically incorrect? We're leaning backward in the regressive Age of Hope and Change.

Let's face it: Mowry's sin, in the view of her feckless detractors, is not merely that she married outside her race. It's also that she is so open about her love for a white man who—gasp!—works for reviled Fox News. Neither of them is political, but the mere association with Bad Things (Fox, conservatives, capitalism, the tea party, Christian activism, traditional values) is an invitation for unabashed hate.

The dirty open secret is that a certain category of public figures has been routinely mocked, savaged and reviled for being partners in interracial marriages or part of loving interracial families (for a refresher, see the video clip of MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry and friends cackling at the holiday photo of Mitt Romney holding his black adopted grandson in his lap).

And the dirty double standard is that selectively compassionate journalists and pundits have routinely looked the other way—or participate directly in heaping on the hate.

Have you forgotten? Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was excoriated by black liberals for being married to wife Virginia, who happens to be white. The critics weren't anonymous trolls on the Internet. They worked for major media outlets and institutions of higher learning. USA Today columnist Barbara Reynolds slammed Thomas and his wife for their colorblind union: "It may sound bigoted; well, this is a bigoted world and why can't black people be allowed a little Archie Bunker mentality? ... Here's a man who's going to decide crucial issues for the country and he has already said no to blacks; he has already said if he can't paint himself white he'll think white and marry a white woman."

Howard University's Afro-American Studies Chair Russell Adams accused Thomas of racism against all blacks

Memo From Middle America | Christmas Trip Raises Grave Questions About The Mexodus

As long-time readers know, I lived for many years in Mexico (see here, here and here), moving back to the U.S. with my Mexican wife and our children in 2008 (see here).

When we lived in Mexico, we would visit the U.S. at Christmastime. Now, we go to Mexico.

We’ve returned safely from this year’s trip. We had a good visit (although I didn’t get around to eating at my favorite Mexican hamburger grill, discussed here). Oh well, next time.

Christmas, or Navidad as they say in Spanish, is an enjoyable season in Mexico. Even Mexico’s hard-core secularists, influential in the elite, generally leave Navidad alone. There is nothing yet approaching the War Against Christmas found north of the border.

We were also there as 2013 gave way to 2014. You could hear both fireworks and firearms going off, a popular Mexican New Year’s custom despite the strict gun laws.

Every Christmas, there is a mass temporary migration of Mexicans residing legally in the U.S. to Mexico, in vehicles laden down with luggage and consumer goods, returning to the U.S. after Christmas. Some are now U.S. citizens, though under current Mexican law that doesn’t prevent them from retaining their Mexican citizenship. (See Mexico's Nationality / Citizenship Shell Game).

Now we have joined that long line of cars that heads south before Christmas and back to the U.S. after Christmas. (See What I Saw on my Christmas Visit to Mexico from two years ago.)

Border crossings at this time of year can take several hours due to the volume of traffic. This year it took us five hours crossing south and over two hours returning north.

The Christmas sojourn of paisanos (Mexicans living north of the border) is almost like a visit to Mexico by Santa Claus. It pumps a lot of money into the Mexican economy. And it helps to preserve the emotional bonds the North-of-the-Border Mexicans have with the “old country”.

Both are clearly important to the Mexican government.

Being right in the middle has given me a graphic sense of the extent of the Mexican diaspora in the U.S.—what sometimes calls the “Mexodus.” A couple of years ago during the border crossing, we counted license tags from 25 U.S. states. And they have some nice vehicles!

The website of the INM, the Mexican immigration bureaucracy, reported in mid-December the arrival of 2.5 million Connacionales [“fellow nationals, that is, fellow Mexicans], 1.7 million of whom were mostly American-born children of Mexicans who had not yet claimed Mexican nationality. (Mexico has changed its law to make them eligible). This compared to a mere 880,000 in the same period in 2012. That’s quite an increase. [ En 56 Días Programa Paisano Atiende A Más De Dos Millones De Connacionales, Boletín 9113 30 de diciembre de 2013]

As always, immigration to the U.S. was a hot topic in the Mexican media. In fact, it was the Mexican media’s obsession with the topic, and its bias, that helped drive me into the immigration patriot camp years ago. (See my Education of a Gringo in Mexico).

The funny thing is, I don’t get the impression that the average Mexican in Mexico is obsessed with Mexican emigration to the U.S. If you asked him, he’d probably verbally support Mexicans in the U.S., but in everyday life he’s got his own life to live in Mexico.

The nightly TV news ran sob stories about Mexican illegal aliens in the United States, to keep up support for amnesty.

In one segment, the featured Victim of the Night was a Mexican woman who has resided in Chicago for 14 years. She is a mother of four (no mention of any father). Currently, two

Trayvon Martin—A Victim Of The Obama/ Holder Campaign To “Disappear” School Crime

What has variously been called a “letter” and a “memo” from the Obama/Holder Justice Department was released (PDF) last week in effect ordering public schools, in the name of the law, to permit black and Hispanic students to break rules and even laws with impunity, while punishing white and Asian students for the same violations and crimes.

Notice Of Language Assistance

[The first page of the DOJ memo comes with this “Notice Of Language Assistance” although the people it’s addressed to are supposed to be American educational bureaucrats]

The giveaway: references to “racial disparities in student discipline” and to “disparate impact”:

The administration of student discipline can result in unlawful discrimination based on race…if a policy is neutral on its face— meaning that the policy itself does not mention race—and is administered in an evenhanded manner but has a disparate impact, i.e., a disproportionate and unjustified effect on students of a particular race.

Emphasis added. “Disparate impact”  is an anti-scientific phrase which institutionalizes the dogma that there are no racial differences in behavior. It has been enshrined in rogue court decisions by racial socialist judges.

The Obama/ Holder letter cites fraudulent “scholarship” that asserts

Treason Lawyer Angelo Paparelli’s Amnesty Scheme Violates His Attorney’s Oath

Angelo Paparelli (pictured right with Rep. Luis Gutierrez

Immigration lawyer Angelo Paparelli (pictured above right with Rep. Luis Gutierrez ) is leading the fight for an expansion of the Obama Regime’s Administrative Amnesty.  In so doing, he proves himself an oath-breaker, an apologist for law-breaking, and an enemy of the Constitution—a full-fledged member of what calls “The Treason Lobby.”

As an attorney, Paparelli must have taken the oath that all attorneys take upon admission to the California state bar:

I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of an attorney and counselor-at-law to the best of my knowledge and ability.

The California Business and Professions Code § 6068 begins:

It is the duty of an attorney to do all of the following: a) To support the Constitution and laws of the United States and of this state.

It is a sad state of affairs when a non-attorney must point out that the Constitution entrusts the legislative power to Congress, not to the President. But Paparelli’s most recent screed is an open attack on the Constitution, and a demand that Barack Hussein Obama impose an amnesty for 20 million illegal aliens by fiat:

We are also little amused about promises broken, like the one where a newly elected President would address comprehensive immigration reform during his first year in office. When it comes to immigration, the President's effort might better be dubbed, IfOnlyObamaCared. To be sure, he's tried the bully pulpit with no tangible success in the recalcitrant House.

ParoleInPlace -The Immigration PIPsqueak That Could Help Solve the Biggest Obstacle To Comprehensive Immigration Reform, by Angelo Paparelli, November 18, 2013

According to Paparelli, the President has broken a promise by not forcing the legislature to do what he wants.  Paparelli would prefer the President to overturn the Constitution for the benefit of 20 million illegal aliens.

Of course, Paparelli has reasons—but they are culpable reasons.

The attorney’s code states that a lawyer’s duty is:

(c) To counsel or maintain those actions, proceedings, or defenses only as appear to him or her legal or just, except the defense of a person charged with a public offense. [California Business And Professions Code. Section 6060-6069]

An attorney is also told

(g) Not to encourage either the commencement or the continuance of an action or proceeding from any corrupt motive of passion or interest. [Emphases added throughout]

Here Paparelli is doubly guilty. His practice is immigration law

National Data | December Employment: Half Total Job Growth Needed To Absorb Last Month’s Immigration

So much for consensus.

Months of accelerating employment growth, lower unemployment claims and, more recently, indications that GDP is growing at a rate not seen since before the Great Recession, had convinced most economists that the worm had decisively turned. Many expected December’s job creation figure to be the largest since the Fall of 2008.

But in fact a mere 74,000 jobs were created in December—the smallest gain in three years. Snow and an unusually short Christmas retail season undoubtedly distorted the results. But long-term trends were not exactly encouraging.

For example: the labor force participation rate (LPR). It fell to 62.6% in December 2013, the lowest level in 35 years. This means that only 62.6 of every 100 working-age adults was actually working or looking for work in December.

A year ago, in December 2012, 63.4 of every 100 adults was in the labor force.

The U.S. labor force shrank by a whopping 496,000 in the past 12 months. Retirement of aging Baby Boomers is often cited as a reason for the decline, but LPRs for people under 55 also dropped sharply over the last year. For them it’s a matter of discouragement caused by a still weak labor market.

For whatever reasons, native-born Americans bore the entire brunt of last year’s labor force decline.

From December 2012 to December 2013:

  • The total  labor force declined by 496,000, or by 0.32%
  • The native-born American labor force fell by 677,000, or by 0.52%
  • Foreign-born labor force rose by 181,000, or by 0.72%

Note that labor force participation rates fell for both immigrants and native-born Americans in 2013. But the immigrant labor force grew because immigrant population growth more than offset the decline in immigrant LPRs. Native-born American population growth did not reach that threshold.

Politicians may not care much about plummeting participation rates. In fact, they may like the idea that lower LPRs can push unemployment rates down even when job growth is weak. That is exactly what happened in December: the unemployment rate fell three ticks, to 6.7%, the first time it’s been below 7.0% in 60 months.

December was the third consecutive month in which the immigrant share of total U.S. employment declined:

In December:

  • Total  employment rose by 143,000, or by 0.10%
  • Native-born American employment rose by 235,000, or by 0.20%
  • Foreign-born employment fell by 92,000, or by 0.39%

But this blip does not alter what looks to be the chief legacy of Barack Obama: the displacement of native-born American workers by immigrants.

We chart this trend in our New American Worker Displacement Index (NVDAWDI). It tracks

John Derbyshire: The ECONOMIST Calls Europeans To Their Duty: Vote For Immigration! Enrich The Global Elite!

John Derbyshire: The ECONOMIST Calls Europeans To Their Duty: Vote For Immigration! Enrich The Global Elite!

A specter is haunting Europe: the specter of Pierre Poujade.

Before he was a specter, Monsieur Poujade was a live human being, a citizen of France. He departed this vale of tears in August 2003, aged 82, leaving behind his specter and an abstract noun: Poujadism.

Poujadism, n.— a conservative reactionary movement to protect the business interests of small traders []

Actually, that’s not quite right. It makes Poujadism sound too narrow. The movement M. Poujade led in mid-1950s France was more broadly populist: patriotic, culturally conservative, hostile to taxation, high finance, and to what Poujade called “the vampire state.” It was a movement of the countryside and small towns, contemptuous of metropolitan elites.

It was some other things, too, being of its time and place. It was, for example, both anti-communist and anti-American. Poujadists also supported France’s colonial rule in Africa and the Caribbean. (French Indo-China was lost while the Poujadist movement was still organizing itself, to the degree it ever did organize itself.)

There was arguably a strain of anti-Semitism too, reinforced by the fact of Pierre Mendès-France, who was Prime Minister during Poujadism’s brief moment of glory (1954-55), being Jewish.

The main appeal of Poujadism, though, was to middle- and lower-middle-class citizens who wanted to live in an orderly state with its culture, traditions, and demography intact, under not too much government.

Poujadism soon succumbed to the usual third party ailments, listed by The Economist in its 2003 obituary of M. Poujade as “bickering, indiscipline and lack of experience.” (Though The Economist tagged these ailments as afflicting “many extremist parties,” without telling us in what aspect the Poujadists were extreme.)

Charles de Gaulle stole the Poujadists’ nationalist clothes, while deftly extricating France from Algeria. Other Poujadist positions were woven into the fabric of Gaullism as practiced by later conservative French leaders like George Pompidou and Jacques Chirac.

The main legacy of Poujadism today: it attracted Jean-Marie Le Pen into politics. Le Pen was elected to parliament in 1956, at age 28, on the Poujadist ticket. In 1972 he founded his own party, the National Front (FN). In 2011 he yielded leadership of the FN to his daughter

How Come MSM War On Poverty 50th-Anniversary Celebrations NEVER Mention Immigration?

See also National Data | Another Lesson From 1965: More Immigrants=More Poverty, by Edwin S. Rubenstein

One Annie Lowrey has proclaimed on the front page of the New York Times that  "50 Years Later, War on Poverty Is a Mixed Bag."  [January 5, 2014]. Miss Lowrey turns out to be 29.  I knew she had to be young because she doesn’t mention the dramatic, unplanned surge in low-skilled immigration that has occurred since 1965, with tens of millions of legal and illegal immigrants swarming the nation’s unguarded borders.

(In fact, none of the Main Stream Media pieces I’ve seen on the War On Poverty so far have mentioned immigration. Here’s

Kosher At Last: FAIR Breaks Taboo, Protests Big Donor Corruption Of GOP Leaders

Zuckerberg,Koch, Adelson: Billionaires for Open Borders. H/T Mother Jones

With Main Stream Media cheerleading for the Amnesty/ Immigration Surge legislation back to the heights of a year ago, and with another Boehner betrayal being widely expected, an important and encouraging development has occurred. FAIR (the Federation For American Immigration Reform), the wealthiest and least effective Inside-The-Beltway Immigration restraint outfit, has broken ranks and denounced the influence of Treason Lobby Plutocrats on the GOP Leadership. This topic had previously been mysteriously taboo.

Ira Mehlmans’ essay Will House Republicans Follow the Money or Their Consciences on Immigration in 2014? Jan 05 2014 is a fine statement of the ugly reality

“Follow the money.” It’s still the surest way to trace the roots of a political disaster: Watergate, the S&L crisis, the mortgage meltdown, Obamacare, and just about every other avoidable mess that has shaken this nation over the past half century.

It will also be the surest way to trace the next political disaster if John Boehner and his inner circle of House Republican leaders decide to force through a package of immigration bills that include amnesty for illegal aliens, and massive increases in future immigration. The primary reason why Boehner and company might move on immigration in 2014 – perhaps the only reason – is money: lots and lots of it.

( emphasis)

Mehlman truly understands what the Amnesty/Immigration Acceleration Bill will do to Americans and his emphasis on the Surge aspect is wise:

Vastly expanding access to new foreign workers at a time when more than 20 million Americans are either unemployed or underemployed, and millions more find themselves downwardly mobile, would pound the final nail in the coffin of our once robust middle class.

…that sort of immigration “reform” is exactly what business interests in the United States are demanding…Having invested heavily in winning approval by the Senate for S.744, the so-called Gang of Eight bill, these interests are likely to spare no expense to get the House to follow suit.

Ann Coulter: Could We Get Some Immigrants Who Can Take A Poll?

With Republicans tying themselves in knots over the Democrats' destructive, but superficially appealing, demand that unemployment benefits be extended to two and a half years, I return to my suggestion that Republicans stop playing defense and go on offense.Never Trust a Liberal Over Three-Especially a Republican

For every issue that MSNBC loves to prattle on about, gloating that it will cost Republicans this or that demographic, there's an equivalent issue to use against the Democrats. (The difference is: Our proposals would actually be good for the country.)

In addition to my repeated suggestion that Republicans introduce bills to institutionalize the dangerous mentally ill and force the Democrats to defend the right of psychos to crap in libraries and shoot up schools, Republicans should take the public's side on immigration.

Democrats love to pretend their sucking up to illegals is all upside for them, but that's because they lie even when taking polls.

Liberals will claim that 99 percent of Americans favor national health care after taking a poll that asks: "Do you support Americans being nice to one another?"

It's the same thing. The government providing free health care to everyone is just being nice.

They'll claim "90 percent of Americans favor banning most guns" based on a poll that asks, "Are you for common sense gun safety or are you against it?"

Similarly, the immigration polls triumphantly brandished by the media ask about positions no one holds, no politician has proposed and no bills would require. Polls are irrelevant if you lie to the people being polled.

Most immigration polls are variations on the one taken by the liberal Brookings Institution last March. Although it has been endlessly cited for allegedly showing that a majority of Americans support amnesty, the poll never asked about amnesty, or any real policy.

Rather, the poll gave respondents only two options, neither of which have been proposed by either political party or are up for a vote anywhere in America.

The options were:

"The best way to solve the country's illegal immigration problem is to secure our borders and arrest and deport all those who are here illegally";

"The best way to solve the country's illegal immigration problem is to both secure our borders and provide an earned path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the U.S."

Neither of those choices describes the position of anyone on either side of the immigration debate. Amnesty proponents have no intention of either securing the border or making illegals do anything to "earn" citizenship. Meanwhile, not a single amnesty opponent has proposed any program to "arrest and deport" illegals.

But amnesty proponents turn around and cite this fraudulent

Greek Anti-Immigration Party Golden Dawn Survives Crackdown—Because It’s Rooted In Middle Class

Greece took over the presidency of the European Union on New Year’s Day. For the next 6 months, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will be the EU head, at least nominally. But back on his home ground, things are tougher: European elections will be held May 22 and his center-right New Democracy party is not only facing the possibility of a high-polling party on its left, SYRIZA, but also the surprising fact that, on its right, the nationalist, anti-immigration party Golden Dawn refuses to go away.

This is not because the Greek government hasn’t tried to make Golden Dawn go away—its unprecedented crackdown last fall verged on hard totalitarianism. And currently Athens is boiling with rumors about yet more new laws limiting or banning the party or prohibiting some of its best-known members from running for office.

But Golden Dawn still seems to have pretty decent chance of winning Athens, the Greek capital, in the municipal elections also held May 22. And the Euro-elections, currently scaring politicians all around Europe because voters use them as a chance to blow off protest steam, could give GD a vote even higher than what it might get in a national election.

More than ever after the murder of two of its young members in November—still unsolved, although a Leftist terrorist group claimed credit—Golden Dawn is surprising everyone with its opinion poll strength. It's a situation unique in the whole Western World: a party whose leader and Members of Parliament are in jail, and whose members have been murdered and persecuted, still achieves third place in the polls, scoring in the 7%-10% range.

After the government crackdown, the Greek Left is trying to reclaim the streets. With the police making it “criminal” for Golden Dawn members to organize almost any event or have any kind of weapons even for self-defense, the Left has been given a clear field to challenge the grassroots character of GD. But its efforts have merely emphasized the chasm in Greek society and highlighted why GD remains popular, especially among the middle class.

Thus one such Leftist effort was a play performed after the crackdown in Agios Panteleimonas Square (St. Panteleimon’s Square). Accompanied by MPs from the leftist SYRIZA Party, a group of performers, bused in from outside, staged a show that Greek’s Main Stream Media then fawned upon, with headlines like “Culture returns to Agios Panteleimonas.”  Naturally the MSM neglected to mention the hundreds of policemen cordoning off the area in case anyone objected to this “anti-racist flowering of civilization.”

But why was Agios Panteleimonas considered so important that it deserved this absurd ceremony of PC purification?

The area was one of the old middle-class neighborhoods in the center of Athens. During the 1990s, it suffered a series of blows. First, a wave of immigration from the Balkan countries arrived. Then, Africans and Asians came. Hordes of Third World immigrants were being dumped there by the organized gangs smuggling them in

The neighborhood quickly became the site for the main Afghan ghetto,
